New Mexico Wild Stands with Coalition Against Caja del Rio Transmission Line

New Mexico Wild, as a member of the Caja del Rio Coalition, strongly opposes the National Nuclear Security Administration’s (NNSA) recent approval of a 14-mile transmission line through sacred Caja del Rio lands for Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Despite massive opposition from the All Pueblo Council of Governors, thousands of public comments, local Hispano communities, and conservation groups, federal agencies moved forward with this destructive project. The transmission line threatens over 12,000 years of cultural history, critical wildlife habitat for elk, bears, and endangered species, clean water sources, and culturally sensitive sites where traditional practices continue today.

Key concerns include:

  • Impact on wildlife corridors and habitat fragmentation
  • Damage to archaeological sites and sacred landscapes
  • Threats to clean water and ecosystem health
  • Disregard for tribal sovereignty and community input

The coalition collected thousands of public comments opposing the project, yet the NNSA ignored community voices to prioritize nuclear weapons facility expansion. New Mexico Wild remains committed to defending these irreplaceable cultural and natural resources alongside our coalition partners.
